Guide to Repair a Roof

It always helps to put a good roof over our heads. Unfortunately, there are times when it’s important to repair the roof, and this is something you can take care of on your own. You can do some of the more fundamental roof repairs if you are a little handy and have access to some simple hand tools, which will help keep you and your home dry on the inside. Here are some of the most common repairs to the roof that might need to be done and how you can do that.I strongly suggest you to visit Broussard Home Services, Puyallup to learn more about this.

One of the most common repairs to be performed on a roof is to replace the shingle that has been damaged or that is entirely missing. If the weather is cold, it is much easier for you to do this, but when the sun hits the roof directly, it can also be achieved with warm weather. The single will need to be cooled down, however, and this can be achieved with some ice water. If required, detach the shingle from the others, using a prybar, after you have cooled the shingle. If you have cooled enough, the sealant that is under the shingle should pop up quickly. It would also be important for you to remove nails from the shingle above it, since they also go through the shingle you are replacing.

You will need to replace it with a new one once the damaged shingle has been removed. Try to pick one that is as similar to the shingle’s color as possible. You may have some left over from when the roof was first removed, but due to fading from the heat, there may be a small color difference. You will need to seal it after you have put the shingle in place and attached it according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Bear in mind, once the damaged shingle is removed, the old sealant is not going to work. You’ll need to use fresh sealant to prevent the shingle from blowing away.

If the shingle on the ridge cap is to be replaced, it is necessary for you to do so properly. This is an area of the roof which can allow water to enter easily. It can cause rot and mold once water gets a foothold within the house. Without damaging them, remove all of the damaged parts of the shingle and loosen the surrounding shingles. Choose a new ridge shingle that, both in thickness and in color, suits the existing shingles. Be sure to mount it in a way that will cover the ridge vent and connect it as directed by the manufacturer.
